Laboratory fume hoods have not developed a nice reputation thanks to the stereotypical presentation of the hoods in science fictions movies. Usually, those characters wearing laboratory fume hoods are usually up to some malevolent purpose, hiding in the shadows, while conducting experiments man was not meant to know about. In fact, in some movies, those wearing laboratory fume hoods may even be secretly hiding a monster in their closet! Ok, that was pretty much common in 1950’s B Movies, but not so much these cinematic days.

The bottom line is that laboratory hoods, while mocked as a B Movie convention by some, provide a very important service to those who work in a lab: safety. There can never be too little safety in a lab setting and those who have unfortunately suffered from accidents or disasters know that a problem derived from a chemical spill, no mater how seemingly minor, is something that should never be blown off as not being a big deal.

In terms of safety, laboratory fume hoods provide an excellent safety net from fumes that may arise from spills or other mishaps. In fact, some may offer forward the argument that laboratory fume hoods offer the best possible protection one could hope for in a lab setting. While making the statement that the fume hoods will provide the best protection, bar none, is a bit of a stretch. However, the importance of the laboratory fume hoods can never be understated nor ever positioned as something optional. Health and safety is never optional and equipment that aids in the safety process should never be underestimated.

Always keep a solid supply of laboratory hoods on hand in a lab so there will be enough protection for all in the area. Keep the lab safe, healthy and educational.
