Hospitals everywhere make it a top priority to ensure a sterile environment for their patients as well as their employees. A person who is sick has a weaker immune system than a person who is healthy and is therefore more prone to being invaded by germs and bacteria that could serve to weaken them further and create more health problems. This is a challenge facing many healthcare facilities as many people go in and out of hospitals all the time and despite effective cleaning and contamination methods, stopping the spreading of harmful bacteria can be difficult. Besides patients and staff there are also administrators, delivery people and an abundance of visitors.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated two million individuals develop some form of infection every calendar year as a direct of coming into contact with a pathogen in a hospital. This is as true of patients as it is of hospital staff. Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) claim the lives of 90,000 people every year and cost the health care system $4.5 billion. It is voluntary for hospitals to report the incidence of HAIs, which is to say that the numbers given may be understated.

Patients who require invasive tests and procedures, such as those who suffer from cancer are more exposed to HAIs than are other people. People who are the most sick are less able to fight off infections, which means they are more susceptible to their conditions getting even worse. If patients are not handled in the appropriate way by staff, such as by not applying dressings correctly or by using instruments that have not been properly sanitized, this can make it possible for HAIs to spread quickly from person to person. When environmental procedures are not followed correctly this can also lead to grave problems.

A sterile environment is something that a healthcare facility must put at the top of its priority list. While some medical professionals argue that HAIs will never be completely eradicated, there are ways to decrease its incidence. Examples include properly managing all departments of a hospital and getting together as a committee and collaborating on the most effective ways to control the spread of infections.
